OKIE so there's some things to reference back to for this page so bear with me!

FIRST of all.. Fun Fact: Elite families are the only ones that have last names. 'Baeten' happens to be the last name for Merlock n Merek's family.

This is not the first mention of the Black Mountain Mines. In fact..... this goes all the way back to the beginning (EW old page alert sorry)...when it's kinda the reason Jonathan and Shera wandered into Serpent territory in the first place. How would humans know about it? :O... good question ;D.

Also... during Merek n Merlock's little confrontation in "Repercussions"... in panel 8(ewwww newer older page alert), Merlock says he has to get going to "the Mines". This is what he is talking about!

See everything is for a reason! It would seem...Keymen knows an additional dangerous enemy is coming to town...and he wants to get ready for it-- seems he suspects there is something of use there. Aaand why not get the risky informant out of the way and busy while he's at it?

Lol nothin gets Zen' attention more than the mention of...MONAAAAY!

In spite of my last post, I agree with Keyman... "Blackmail" truly is an ugly word.

Personalized incentives, offers they can't refuse, cooperative Motivation, et al, however, can all be considered GOOD things! but blackmail? naaaaah

LOL I believe in miracles!

Don't be sorry making tie-ins with older pages. That's good storytelling; stuff you wonder about suddenly making sense!

Zen's loyalty goes to the highest bidder. How . . . mercenary!

18th Sep 2017, 12:07 AM

Well, it's not like he's working for Merek's enemy. He offers spying services against the council and elite, and now he does so for one more client.

Haha that is true, thank you for reminding me! Hahaha I am not proud of that old art tho X"D..that is for sure!

You are not wrong about Zen! Keymen got this sense from him...which is why he swooped in with the highest bid no one else would be willing to pay hehe

Oh man...are they using human slaves at the mines? D: Is that how humans know about it? And I dunno, I have a feeling the mines aren't producing gold, but something much more sinister...not sure what yet, but...tbd...

Ohhh that is a very interesting theory! I'm very excited for everyone to see what's going on at the mines X333

It will definitely play in to some other little things that have been established!

Oh, Zen. You never fail to amuse. :]

And Keymen, taking every opportunity to input a lesson. Just like old times. XD

Anyway, I really like this page. Even more than the last one, it's got a great deal of humor, which the comic's not had a lot of lately, and I appreciate every iota. You're good at that, balancing out the light with the dark, so no matter how heavy the story gets, I have faith for the future. Balance. Always key. So well done there. This interaction in particular is fantastic because these two characters play off of each other SO well. They're basically just a goldmine of hilarious little banters. It's tough to get that kind of rapport with the other characters - and I think Zen's habit of never opening his eyes (except for money XD) just helps add to the atmosphere.

Oooh, Baeten! Nice to have a last name for the people I despise, excellent. And um. Those mines.... Well, good to know that the people I despise run a place I despise, so at least that all matches up. You did a great job of making that place look terrifying, by the way. And the way Zen just blithely says 'oh yes and you can't even start up this way without being executed' is blatantly chilling.

It's probably for the best that Shera and Jonathan never made it up that far. As bad as things have been for them, I have a feeling it could have been SO much worse.

Keymen raises an excellent point though - who is hiding what from who? Clearly there's things going on up at the mine that SOMEONE wants kept a secret, you don't execute people just for walking elsewise. If I had to take a guess, it's likely some combination of the two - the Council taking advantage of the relative remote place to do some dirty business of their own while the Baetens take that same advantage to hide some of their OWN dirty business from the Council. Or perhaps its less of a secret and more of the Baetens being being careful not to let any of their extracurricular activities cross a very wide gray area they've been given so that the Council simply won't care.

Also, that is a frontier umbra shadow. I see those conspicuous shoulder spikes. >.>

Keymen, you fool no one. XD

Now! Art! Oh, so many lovely expressions, I can't choose a favorite. They're all brilliant. And having recently reread some older pages (don't blame me, you linked them) I just wanna express again my love for how much you've improved. Shoulders! Eeee~ And I love the way you color hair, have I ever said that before? If not, I have now. I ove it.

Keymen's 'what are they hiding' panel has some great eyes going on there. Lovely.

And of course the last two panels are just hilarity in a can, whoo!

I think my favorite panel though, despite all this, is the one with the mountain pass in it. You've done a really excellent job of getting across the dangerous and foreboding atmosphere there. I also have a thing for backgrounds, I'm learning, and it's a really nicely done background. There's not much of that in the rest of the page, because fog. XD

And as always, I appreciate your paneling. Masterfully done.

Thank you so much! Yea haha it's nice to have some humor in this thing. I MISS HUMOR! And yess I knew right a way Keymen and Zen would be fun to have together XDD

Yesss the mines are a very formidable place indeed--- lots of things going up there you don't want to find out about. Except yes you do and you will! LOL
But yep! Keymen's basically thinking a good way to handle enemies is let them handle each other if possible!

Thank you so much for you goldmine of insights and comments every week! Get it? Mines? see what i did there? No..? Okay X"D
